Ex-Black Stars defender, Sam Johnson has urged national team selectors to come clean with their call ups.
National team call ups has been a topical issue among most African countries and Ghana is no exception.
Prior to Ghana qualifying for the 2021 AFCON to be staged in Cameroon next year, coach Charles Akonnor’s selection came under serious scrutiny by the public and some football connoisseurs.
A player whose invitation irked many football pundits was Kwame Poku who plays for English league two club, Colchester United.
The 19-year-old’s inclusion in the Black Stars elicited questions as to why he should be selected ahead of equally quality players from the Ghana premier league and others in Europe.
With the questions and doubts surrounding coach Akonnor’s recent call ups for Ghana’s last two AFCON qualifiers, ex-Black Stars defender, Sam Johnson wants the right selection made for the national team ahead of the tournament.
“People should not think about their pockets, how they are going to sell players or the exposure that they will give this player so that they will sell the player.
“They should think about GHANA first and choose the right people who are supposed to be in the squad.
“Because it somebody wants to choose somebody because of his own self or whatever.
“They should think that Ghana is bigger than all of them.
“So five or ten or fifteen people cannot capture or hijack the nation because of they will choose their own team instead of choosing the right people.
“So I hope and pray that they will choose the right people who deserve to be there so that we can bring the cup.” Sam Johnson told Adamu Muftawu.
The Black Stars qualified for the 2021 AFCON after they were held by South Africa to a 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
The qualification was completed with a 3-1 victory over São Tomé at the Accra Sports Stadium in the final AFCON qualifier.
Ghana topped Group C with 13 points with Sudan finishing in second on 12 points.
South Africa missed the qualification by a whisker, finishing 3rd with 10 points and São bottom with no points.
