It was just a single goal that separated Turkish Super Ligue Champions, Besiktas and Galatasaray after the last games of the 2020/21 Turkish Super Ligue season.
Besiktas finished top of the table with 84 points, same as Galatasaray but the former scored 45 goals as against the latter’s 44 at the end of the season.
Besiktas defeated Goztepe 2-1 in the final games of the season away to secure the top spot.
The trophy is Besiktas’ 16th league title which they last won in the 2016/17 season.
Ghana midfielder, Bernard Mensah who was on the bench expressed his joy after a six year wait for his first career title.
It is Mensah’s first league title in Europe after spells in Portugal and Spain with Vitoria Guimaraes and Atletico Madrid respectively.
He is currently on loan at Besiktas from Kayserispor with the former having the option of making the deal a permanent one.
Mensah could win the double if Besiktas beat Antalyspor in the final of the Turkish Cup on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old made 31 Super Lig appearances, scoring 4 goals.
Fellow Africans, Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar, Algeria’s Rachid Ghezzal and DR Congo’s Fabrice N’Sakala were part of the winning squad.
