As a football club that once served as a production line for Ghana’s various male national teams, getting relegated from the Ghana Premier League is a sad end to top flight football for Liberty Professionals. The Dansoman based club suffered relegation from the top flight for the first time in 22-years. Their relegation fight began as early as the first round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League. The Scientific Soccer Lads started their first round on poor note after recording just five points in their opening five games of the season. They produced a 1-1 draw in their first three matches against, Bechem United at home, Elmina Sharks away and to Eleven Wonders at home. Their fourth game was at the Golden City Park against Berekum Chelsea where they lost 1-0. Their fifth game came a sigh of relief when they went past Great Olympics 2-0 at the Carl Reindorf Park in Dansoman to rake in a paltry five points from a possible 15. One cannot predict what might have happened to the club that almost controlled the male Ghana national teams with the production of quality players.

Liberty Professionals woes deepened as the Ghana Premier League wore on with yet poor performance to show for in the subsequent matches after picking just five points from their opening games. This time it was just four points from the next games of the league. They managed to hold Medeama to a goalless draw in Tarkwa with the result bringing hopes back because Medeama were not a cheap opponent. The hopes were further emboldened when they stunned Legon Cities FC 1-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium. The victory against Cities FC will however be short lived when they fell to Asante Kotoko 2-0 subsequently at the Accra Sports Stadium after the Porcupine Warriors had adopted the venue as home ground. A 2-1 home defeat against Ebusua Dwarfs plunged Liberty into more misery moving into their next game against Dreams FC. Liberty were pummeled 4-1 by Dreams FC at the Theater of dreams in Dawu.

Liberty Professionals

The hopes of Liberty Professionals kept dwindling after their first 10 games of the season as they were on nine points from a possible 30. The week 11 fixture worsened matters for Liberty after suffering a 5-0 defeat against West Africa Football Academy at the Sogakope Park to send a bad signal of a club that would not do well in the season.

Liberty Professionals in a warm up

Fast forward to their last games of the season, they showed glimpses of coming back to life when coach Andy Sinason was roped in to help in the technical affairs of the club. They managed to pick an eight decent point from their last five games. It began however with a 5-1 home defeat against AshantiGold at the Sogakope Park in week 30. They put the heavy defeat behind them to claim three points from Inter Allies in a 2-0 away win and a 3-2 home win over Karela United FC at the Accra Sports Stadium. There were hopes of survival when they held Hearts of Oak to a 1-1 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium in the penultimate game of the season. They however needed all three points against another struggling side, King Faisal to stay in the premier league but that game ended goalless to send Liberty back into 17th on the league table with 40 points.

Liberty Professionals, Dwarfs and Inter Allies are relegated

Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs joined Liberty Professionals and Inter Allies as the clubs to be relegated from the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season. It is very sad to note that, a club that has produced a former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, UEFA Champions League winners, Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari, Italian Scudetto winner Kwadwo Asamoah, John Paintsil as well as 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup winners, Daniel Agyei, Rabiu Mohammed, Kassenu Ghandhi plus a host of FIFA World Cup participants will be suffering until their relegation.
