Asante Kotoko’s quest to play in the CAF Confederation Cup was dashed after they lost to Berekum Chelsea in the quarter final of the MTN FA Cup in Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors had already lost the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League to rivals, Hearts of Oak. Kotoko gathered 57 points, four less than the Phobians who will represent Ghana at the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.
The only opportunity was the FA Cup but fellow premier league side, Berekum Chelsea beat them after a 5-4 penalty shootouts in 120 minutes of action at the Len Clay Stadium.
Prior to the game, some irate fans hurled insults at the playing body which head coach Mariano Baretto believes affected their match day performance.
Baretto is appalled by the behavior of the fans who exercised that action.
“In the end, I only have to say thank you to the players because it was a very hard day.
“I think some people who are supposed to be Kotoko supporters today will be happy because they came to our lunch time, threatening and insulting our players.
“So most the players today, they wouldn’t like to play, they play only because we asked them to play.
“So I think for these guys who came to make these things, they are happy because they got what they are looking for, making everything to us to don’t win.
“So congratulations for them,” Baretto said.
The Portuguese trainer however urged the loyal Kotoko fans to remain solidly behind the team for future assignments.
“But for the real fans of Kotoko, I have to tell them, they don’t have to be ashamed for these boys.
“Most of them they are coming from second division, they made their best, they finished in second.” Mariano Baretto added.
Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup means, the 23 times Ghana Premier League holders have gone the whole of 2020/21 season without a single domestic trophy.
Kotoko might be lucky to play in the CAF Confederation Cup that will only be if Hearts of Oak win the MTN FA Cup. They will automatically be the entrants because they placed second on the league log.
