Newly promoted Ghana Premier League club, Accra Lions Football Club made what their head coach, Andreas Rainer Kraft called a “ historic” premier league debut on Friday night.
The Accra based club managed to hold Elmina Sharks to 1-1 draw despite fielding inexperienced players in their opening premier league game at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Lions went down on the 64th minute courtesy Sharks’ Michelle Sarpong who is on loan from Ghana Premier League holders, Hearts of Oak.
They however pulled parity in the latter minutes of the match when talismanic Rauf Salifu scored with six minutes to full time.
Head coach of Accra Lions, Rainer Kraft agrees to inexperience from his side and admits that will disturb their chances against big clubs like Hearts of Oak and Kotoko.
“The question is always difficult, every match is a difficult match whether you play in Division One, whether you play the Ghana Premier League.
“What we have to face is already past. We are a very very young team, very very inexperienced players which you also see in our training sessions, a lot of dynamic styles but not really experienced.
“So this is probably the biggest challenge we could face because if you play against teams like Hearts of Oak or Kotoko, all those great names, you would have to face a lot of experienced players who know how to deal with our young boys.
“For me as a coach, the most important thing is that we created a lot of chances and the rest is up to individual quality on that day, it’s up to coincidence and as you all know, fifty percent of goals happen by coincidence.” Rainer Kraft said.
Formed in 2015, the Accra based club were crowned winners of the 2017 Greater Accra Division Two Zone IV.
They earned promotion into Division One three years after its foundation and finally into the Ghana Premier League at the end of the 2020/21 Division One Zone III League season.
