Ghana captain, Andre Ayew can afford to celebrate the progression to the next round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but remains cautions of the main task ahead.
The Al Sadd forward’s solitary penalty on the 33rd minute against South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday was enough to see the Black Stars through time the next stage of the qualifiers.
Ghana trailed the Bafana Bafana by three points prior to beating them and needed a win by a goal or two margin to progress.
South Africa, who were on 13 points would have been comfortable with any form of draw to see them through from Group G.
The Blacks Stars await an opponent in March for the final round of qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar and Andre Ayew believes that is where the major work lies.
“I think we had more clear chances. Yes it was a tough game.
“South Africa came in, they did their job but we won this game where could have scored more.
“I think the penalty was not one, there was a clear penalty on Jordan [Ayew] also, so the referee should have taken two penalties.
“But it’s part of the game at least we are happy that we have won and we are going to the next round and there is a big job to do in March.” Andre Ayew said in a post-match presser.
The Black Stars went through to the last qualifying round with more goals (7 compared to South Africa’s 6) scored.
Ghana joined Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Mali and DR Congo into the playoffs with the remaining four spots to be decided on Monday.
