Hearts of Oak hosted Bechem United in week 11 in a sparsely populated Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Phobians were the first to make an attempt at the Hunters’ goal area but an exchange between Gladson Awako and Salifu Ibrahim on the 6th minute was eventually blown wide by the latter for Bechem United’s goal kick.
The Hunters threatened the Phobians with Augustine Okrah taking his first shot on target but it was calmly collected by Richmond Ayi in goal for Hearts of Oak on the 11th minute.
Obuoba Dasi was a torment for Mohammed Alhassan and James Sewornu on the 23rd minute when he raced past them but his pass to Karim Abdul was saved by Richmond Ayi.
The Phobians quickly replied with an incursion a minute after Bechem United’s threat but Salifu Ibrahim shot feebly into the arms of Abdulai Iddrisu in post for the Hunters.
The 21 time Ghana champions were forced to make their first substitution on the 32nd minute with goalkeeper Benjamin Mensah replacing injured Richmond Ayi.
A beautiful exchange between Salifu Ibrahim and Gladson Awako saw an overlapping William Denkyi shoot straight into the arms of Abdulai Iddrisu.
Bechem United broke quickly on the 38th minute but Hearts of Oak were saved by Frederick Ansah Botchway’s timely clearance for Bechem United’s corner kick which was eventually wasted.
Fatawu Mohammed had a perfect opportunity to put the Phobians ahead on the 42nd minute but he controlled the ball to Bechem United goalkeeper, Abdulai Iddrisu instead of hitting hard at goal.
Both sides failed to find the back of the net moving into the first half time break.
Back for the second half, Hearts of Oak coach, Samuel Boadu effected a double substitution with Salim Adams replacing Isaac Mensah and Kwadwo Obeng Junior coming on for Frederick Ansah Botchway on the 49th minute.
With 53 minutes played, Gladson Awako wasted a perfectly placed free kick much to the chagrin of the few Phobian fans present at the stadium to offer their support.
Bechem United’s Augustine Okrah nearly found the opener on the 60th minute but Mohammed Alhassan came in with a timely stoppage of the ball to deny the Hunters.
Bechem United brought on Paul Quaye for Abdul Karim with Hafiz Konkoni making an injury return to replace Emmanuel Annor.
The Phobians effected their final substitution with youngsters, Yaw Amankwah Baafi taking the place of Salifu Ibrahim and Seidu Suraj replacing Abu Ushau on the 65th minute.
Obuoba Dasi who was a thorn in Hearts of Oak’s defence was surprisingly pulled out by Bechem United coach, Kasim Mingle for Emmanuel Avornyo on the 73rd minute.
Aaron Essel completed Bechem United’s final substitution when he came on for visibly tired Augustine Okrah on the 83rd minute.
Hearts of Oak youngster, Seidu Suraj had a fine chance to tee off Kofi Kordzi for a tap in but decided to take a try which went way off the bar on the 87th minute.
With the 90 minutes up in Accra, goalkeeper Benjamin Mensah rose to the occasion to save the Phobians with a cracking clearance resulting in an injury to Bechem United right back, Clinton Duodoo.
Referee Jones Akubiem whistled for the end of the game with spoils shared at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Phobians now have 14 points with two outstanding matches against Asante Kotoko and Medeama to clear.
