The two leg tie produced a 3-2 aggregate score with Daniel Amartey playing the entire game at the Rhoazon Park on Thursday.
Benjamin Bourigeaud opened the score for Rennes on the 8th minute with which they held on into the break.
Flavian Teit sent Rennes ahead once again on the 76th minute but that was not enough to send them through.
The Leicester City squad paraded Daniel Amartey of Ghana, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi all of Nigeria who played a part in their qualification.
The above mentioned players will face each other in the first leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Baba Yara Stadium on March 25.
News coming in has it that Wilfred Ndidi has sustained a serious injury after limping off in the game and is likely to miss the Ghana clash.
The second tie will be at the Moshood Abiola Stadium Stadium in four days with the winner over the double leg booking a slot for Qatar later this year.
