Asante Kotoko inched closer to claiming their 25th Ghana Premier League title after pipping West Africa Football Academy 1-0 in week 27 on Saturday.
Cameroon striker, Franck Mbella latched on to Andrews Appauh’s 64th minute through pass to round off WAFA goalkeeper, Osei Kwadwo Bonsu for their first goal.
The victory was the Porcupine Warriors’ first away this season and in seven attempt at the Sogakope Park.
The Cameroonian import by virtue of his second half strike increases his season’s tally to 18 goals – surpassing the long standing record set by ex-club striker, Eric Bekoe.
Kotoko Coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum saw an improvement in his squad having lost their last two games against RTU and Legon Cities FC prior to the WAFA clash.
“If you look at the RTU game and the Legon Cities game, this looks more better, this looks more compact, more teamwork, more disciplined, more determined, more hungry team to win comparative to the RTU and the [Legon] Cities game.
“I think they looked very disciplined on the touch line, they played with my voice, tactically what we did throughout the week and what we did yesterday with respect to how WAFA was going to play, we created more chances than WAFA which is unusual when you play at Sogakope.
“But then we allowed them to possess the ball and anytime we got the ball, we tried as much as possible to transition quickly and it was one of those transitions that [Andrews] Appau gave the penetrative pass.” Prosper Narteh Ogum told StarTimes.
Asante Kotoko sit top of the table with 55 points from 27 games – ten points ahead of second placed Bechem United, who will clear their week 27 game at King Faisal on Sunday.
