Outgone head coach of Ghana, Otto Addo says it was difficult to get him released by his club, Borussia Dortmund for the national team job.
The German born ex-international was roped in to replace the departed Serb, Milovan Rajevac who had failed to qualify Ghana out the group in the last AFCON in Cameroon.
Addo managed to weave the four time African champions past rivals, Nigeria over two legs to book the 2022 FIFA World Cup slot in Qatar.
His contract at Dortmund was and is still valid when he was whisked back home for the Ghana job and he explains what it took to snap him up.
“Before I started to work for the GFA, everybody knew and I said it before that I have a contract with Dortmund and I have to respect that.
“Even to come here, it was difficult and the GFA put in a lot of effort to release me and at the end they came back themselves to Dortmund to speak to the board.
“And at the end they decided to release me for this task.” Otto Addo said.
The Black Stars have exited the group stage in their last two World Cups [2014 and 2022].
A 3-2 defeat against Portugal and a win over South Korea by the same margin plus a 2-0 final group H loss saw the West Africans exit the tournament in Qatar with three points.
