Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has explained why Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey was reserved for the second leg game against Angola on Monday in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Hughton who took charge of his Black Stars game against Angola in the first leg at the Baba Yara Stadium, decided against starting the former Atletico Madrid midfielder in the reverse fixture in Luanda.
However, Hughton addressed the matter during the post-match press conference, stating that Partey had a minor injury issue that posed a significant risk to his participation.
“Thomas has a small injury issue & we felt it was too big of a risk to start him,” the Black Stars head coach explained.
Despite Partey’s absence, Ghana secured a 1-1 draw against Angola, taking the team’s points to eight on top of group E.
