Ex-Ghana international, Yaw Acheampong has attributed the nation’s 19-year absence at the Olympic Games to lack of “patience and time” to build a team.
Acheampng was a member of the squad that won bronze – Ghana and Africa’s first ever Olympic medal in Barcelona 1992.
It has been 19-years since the Black Meteors qualified for the festival after last appearing in Athens 2004.
Ghana however edged out Algeria to qualify for the continental tournament with a 2-1 aggregate score line over two legs to book a slot at the AFCON U-23 in Morocco in June.
A spirited performance saw the team hold Ageria to a 1-1 draw in Annaba with the reverse fixture ending 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium
Yaw Acheampong told Radio Gold Sports: “I think time and patience is what we did not have, now that we have time and patience, we are about to witness a new generation of guys with a good performance.
“Patience in terms of team building, you know anytime we are going for a tournament, our target is to win the trophy.
“But we don’t plan well but I believe now everything is going well according to plan and I believe now that we have qualified to represent Ghana at the Africa level and looking at the team’s that have qualified, I’m very very sure that we can qualify for the next Olympic Games.” Yaw Acheampong told Radio Gold Sports.
