South Africa female national team head coach, Desiree Ellis has given rave reviews about her squad following their qualification for the 2023 FIFA World Cup round 16.
The Bayana Bayana progressed to the knock out stage for the first time after striker, Thembi Kgatlana’s added time goal secured a 3-2 victory against Italy in their third group G game.
The win earned the African side 4 points behind Europeans, Sweden who amassed 9.
Desiree Ellis said: “I said we deserved to get the three points after what we put into the two games but today they were incredible.
“We know that they have the resilience, we know that they have the bravery but today words cannot describe it, they were incredible.
“We have never come from behind and we worked on that in training and it was 2-2 and we just threw the kitchen sink at them.
“We knew it was not good enough and everyone was amazing.” Desiree Ellis said.
South Africa will now face the Netherlands who finished top of group E with 7 points.
