The road to the quarter final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup ended for South Africa.
The Bayana Bayana succumbed to the might of the Netherlands – losing 2-0 in the round of 16.
It is however a good finish for the Mzansiland and the continent in general and captain of the side, Thembi Kgatlana had this to say after losing.
“At the back of our minds, potentially the last match so we had to give it all because we didn’t know what was going to happen after 90 minutes and we had to bring our A game.
“It’s football, you win some, you lose some and equally so they didn’t have as many chances as we did but they had to work for those chances.
“Truth be told we had a quick turn over we played on Wednesday and they played earlier than us, they had more time to rest, we didn’t and I think that showed in the second half because the fatigue started coming in.
“We started making mistakes, we messed it a little bit but I minuet be proud of the team for the effort they put in.” Thembi Kgatlana told CentreCircle.online.
Jill Roord and Lineth Beerensteyn got the goals for Netherlands on the 9th and 68th minute respectively.
